Drinking Water & Wells

The mission of the Drinking Water Program is to protect public health by assuring that residents and visitors to Jefferson County have access to a safe and reliable supply of quality drinking water and that it is reasonably available. By enforcing and monitoring laws regulating public and private water supplies, the Drinking Water Program minimizes the threat of waterborne disease.

The program reviews water availability to meet building permit requirements pursuant to the Growth Management Act; provides water bottles for bacteriologic testing; provides technical assistance for small public water supply systems and inspects construction of individual water wells.

Sales Tax on Bottled Water

Beginning June 1, 2010, bottled water became taxable, however there are two scenarios in which bottled water is exempt from sales tax:
1.       If there is no other source of potable water.
2.       If purchased by prescription for treatment of a medical condition.
