Tobacco Prevention

Port Townsend High School students (left to right): Abbey Noeldechen, Amber Garner, Ashely Goodrich, and Brittani Mellard are the 2012 peer educators for Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU). This group offered tobacco prevention presentations to all the 4th grade and 8th grade science classrooms in Blue Heron Middle school.

These dedicated peer educators have organized TATU  presentations for their PTHS senior projects.

"Any effort to decrease future smoking levels among high school students or adults needs to include a focus on reducing experimentation and regular smoking among teenagers and even pre-teens, as well. Delaying the age when kids first experiment with cigarettes reduces risk that they become regular smokers and increase their chance of successfully quitting if they do begin regular smoking" Tobacco Free Kids

The 1998 State Tobacco Settlement 15 years Later
Since the states settled their lawsuits against the tobacco companies in November 1998, The Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids has issued annual reports assessing whether the states are keeping their promise to use settlement funds — estimated at $246 billion over the first 25 years — to attack the enormous public health problems posed by tobacco use in the United States.

This report is issued by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, American Heart Assocation, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Lung ASsociation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights.  See the 2013 progress report here:  Broken Promises To Our Children
