JEFFERSON COUNTY— A flock of domestic poultry has tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in Jefferson County. Test results on Friday, July 1, 2022, confirmed that this is the first case to be reported in Jefferson County this year. Avian influenza has been confirmed in Washington over recent weeks, and Jefferson County’s is 1 of 29 flocks positively identified in the state in 2022. 

Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) announced the detection of avian influenza in Jefferson County on July 1, with the reminder that “high-pathogenic avian influenza is fatal in poultry and spreads quickly. The first outbreak of high-pathogenic avian influenza occurred in Washington in 2014. Dr. Allison Berry, Jefferson County Health Officer, reports that “thankfully, this strain of avian influenza is very unlikely to transmit to humans but it can be quite serious for birds.” Despite the low risk to humans, Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) is monitoring all human contacts for disease. JCPH will also follow up with testing and referral to treatment if needed. Currently, there are no known human cases of avian influenza in Washington. 

If you suspect a flock is ill, you can report domestic bird illness and death to the WSDA Avian Health Program at 1-800-606-3056. Report dead or sick wild birds using the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife’s online reporting tool.
